Creativity

Growing up I never considered myself to be creative. At school I didn't enjoy wood-work, I was terrible in art and I absolutely hated home-ec. I remember complaining to my mum that having to learn sewing at school was ridiculous and archaic, and that I could see no part of my future that involved a sewing machine. Um yeah. Times sure do change huh!

Now I relish any opportunity to crack out the power tools, visit the hardware store almost every weekend, sew things regularly and spend a good portion of each week being creative and making things.

I don't know if it was me being a typical rebellious kid or if it was something I needed to grow into, but I think creativity was always something that was going to be part of my life. Now I'm not claiming to be any kind of creative genius, far from it, but I do get so much satisfaction from making things.

I think part of where it comes from is my Mum, she has always been incredibly creative. She was always making something when I was growing up. Whether it was clothes for my sister and I when we were younger, furniture for our house, embroidery or quilts... she always had and still does have something on the go. My sister is the same, she is always creating beautiful things. In fact it was her sewing blog that first started me blogging in the first place (she doesn't blog there anymore, but has recently started a new blog here). I don't think she ever denied her creativity though (although she did study accounting and that is a sure fire way to stiffle any creative thoughts!!).

Another one of my friends was recently saying to me that she spent the first 30 years of her life feeling like she didn't have a true passion. She's recently taken up photography and is taking some of the most gorgeous and creative photos I've seen.

How about you? Do you consider yourself to be creative? Is it something you've always known you were passionate about or is it something that you've only stumbled upon recently?

  1. I think I've always kind of thought of myself as creative even though my creativity is so strongly inspired by other far-more-creative people. There is something about the simple act of creating which feels creative in itself even though it may not be unique. (Does that make any sense?) I think you are incredibly creative and I thank you for all the inspiration you offer here daily! xo

    1. Makes perfect sense Mel! Sometimes I make things that I could've bought for cheaper just because I love making stuff so much :)

  2. My mum taught me to knit and sew from when I was tiny and I continued to do both until my daughter was school age. Then clothes became really cheap and I was busy with five kids and it wasn't fashionable to have homemade anything...so only a couple of years ago..about as long ago as my blog started up..I took creative stuff up again.

    1. I love that you came back to it Carol! Isn't it funny how handmade is on trend now after being unpopular for so long :)

  3. My mom sounds a lot like your mum. She was always sewing something for herself to wear or making things for our home. She even made my wedding gown(without a pattern). She used to work as a seamstress for a bridal shop. I wished I had paid more attention when she was sitting down at the machine.

  4. I'm creative in a lazy way! I enjoy projects, but lose patience easily. But reading your post about home ec days brought back memories- I remember actually submitting the exact same pair of tracksuit pants for grading to my year 8 teacher, as my twin sister had submitted the previous day, because I could not be bothered to complete my own tracksuit pants... I think the grade was slightly different, but I was not going to contest it :)

  5. I think coming from a migrant family, my parents always worked hard to provide for us and instil in us that study and handwork were the pathways to success. We were allowed to follow creative pursuits but they were a strictly spare time thing. My brother and I were strongly encouraged to go to uni to study something that would secure us good jobs. Which we both did:) Now my mum appreciates my creative brain but is still very happy I went to uni.

  6. I just found your blog and thought this post was really interesting. I never really considered myself creative growing up. My mum had her own business doing cake decorating and I did a lot of baking with her but otherwise I was pretty academic. I avoided art at school as I don't like the feel of clay on my hands. I qualified as an actuary - we're meant to be more boring than accountants :) Once I was pregnant with my first child though, it was like a switch got turned on. I've got more creative with my baking and also more recently taken up sewing, which I have pretty much become obsessed with. It's good to see other people have come to it later too.

    1. Isn't it funny how that switch can just happen Laura! I love your blog btw, my sister recently made that same Oliver + S hat for her girls :)
