Max's Big Boy Bed

A couple of weeks ago (at almost 20 months) we made the big decision to move Max into a toddler bed. I decided to hold off on posting it for a while, I wanted to make sure that it went ok first.

And so far, so good! Some things are harder now that he can get out of his bed, but some things are easier too. It balances out quite well!

The things that I'm loving are:
  • In the mornings Max will often get up and play for a while before either coming to find us, or crying for us to come and get him. Bonus mini sleep-ins!
  • I don't need to worry about him climbing out of his cot and hurting himself anymore.
  • We've started tucking Max into bed and then reading him a bedtime story each night.
  • I will often lie on the floor next to Max's bed, holding his hand and singing songs with him for a 5 minutes each night.
  • On the days that he refuses to stay in his bed and nap I lie on the floor next to his bed until he falls asleep. I thought this would frustrate me, but instead I find myself using that time to pray.
  • He looks so cute sleeping in his little 'big boy' bed!

Things I'm not loving quite as much:
  • Some nights our usual routine doesn't work and he just keeps getting out of bed, opening his door and calling out 'Mumma' until I come and see him. This can go on for up to 40 minutes.
  • One day when I thought Max was napping he was actually colouring in his table and chairs with (non-washable) crayons.
  • How quickly my baby is growing up!!

All in all, it has definitely been a positive move and one that I think Max was definitely ready for.

  1. What a cutie, the cot looks so good in his room! And keeping that second side on will protect your wall from kick marks :o)

  2. Awww! He's cute. Watch that lying on the floor next to his bed or you may well find your lying on the bed with them until they're 6, and then it's frustrating *sigh*

  4. Climbing out of the cot surely is that sign they are ready. Your pictures look like they come right out of a magazine - how do you do it? Gorgeous. And that orange blanket - LOVE! We were lucky with Brian, he didn't get out of his bed by himself for a LONG time.

  6. Brooke - Thank you! The orange blanket is a quilt that my Mum made for Max, I'm so glad you like it. As for the photos, I use a DSLR, an external flash that I point to the ceiling and a good quality lens. Beyond that I just point and shoot.

Rhu - Thank you :) I love the combo too!

  7. Hello! I am working on a book development project. I am writing a children's book about the transition from crib to "big kid bed." I am looking for photographs to use in my book, and I really like the photos you have posted to your blog of your son in his new bed! I am writing to ask if you would be willing to give me rights to use the photograph/s in my book. I will need permission to use it for commercial use. Please let me know if you have questions about the content of the book. Thank you!
